General

What is your jewellery made of?

All of our silver jewellery is made of solid sterling silver. It is not plated and the silver will not wear off. Some of our sterling silver jewellery has been gold plated and you will always find an accurate description on the product pages.

Different to our sterling silver range, our Milena Zu collection is mainly made from fine brass or steel wire. Some of these pieces have then been plated in silver or 24ct gold and each piece is fully described on the product page.

What is sterling silver?

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other alloy, usually copper. 100% pure silver is too soft to use for jewellery. Instead pure silver is combined with another metal and this combination, or alloy as it is called, is what we know as sterling silver. This is strong enough to use for jewellery and the silver does not loose any of its beautiful qualities. Sterling silver is sometimes referred to as 925 silver and is often stamped with ‘925’ on the back or on the inside.

Nickel has been known to be used in the alloy of sterling silver, but as it may cause allergic reactions, it is rarely used anymore. All of our jewellery at Crowded Silver is nickel-free, so no need to worry.

We take great care with our quality control and also with the way our jewellery is shipped. Should you have received a faulty or damaged item from us, we sincerely apologise. Please contact us straight away and we will work with you to get the best solution.

A jewellery piece is a delicate item irrespective of how well made it is. Treat your jewellery with gentle hands and avoid bending or forcing locks….and you will be able to enjoy your new jewellery for many years.

Care

How should I care for my jewellery?

All jewellery pieces are delicate items and should be treated with appreciation and gentle hands. We recommend storing your silver jewellery in small zip lock plastic bags with the air squeezed out. This prevents the silver from tarnishing, ie going dark. This will also prevent the jewellery from being scratched during storage.

Avoid contact with chemicals such as perfumes and hairsprays…so follow the rule of First off, Last On. See our Silver Care page for further recommendations on how to maintain and care for your jewellery.

How should I clean my jewellery?

Your silver jewellery can be gently cleaned with soapy water to get rid of eg oils. Dap dry only to avoid scratching. Tarnish can be removed by using a special silver cleaning cloth. These can easily be found in most department stores. Small containers with silver dip solutions are also available and a 5 second dip will leave your piece free of tarnish and beautiful and sparkling again. For further care tips, please see our Silver Care page.

Our Milena Zu range of jewellery is fine wire jewellery often plated with silver or gold and oxidised. These pieces cannot be cleaned with silver cloth because of the plating. Silver dip solutions are not recommended as it will remove any of the deliberate oxidation.

Can I engrave my jewellery?

Some jewellery may be engraved. However, we are not able to organise this and cannot take liability for any engraving damages or whether a piece is deemed suitable or not for engraving.
